Last December we were asked by the Chamber of Commerce to paint windows in Downtown Sedro Woolley and the proceeds would go to Relay for Life of Skagit County. Of course we jumped on this! We got to paint both Stiles Law and the Chamber of Commerce Windows for this Fundraising Window Competition.
Stiles Law
We were requested to paint Stiles Law in a snow theme with the words peace, love, and joy. If you haven’t seen their building it was quite the undertaking as they have a corner lot with many windows. We spent 3-days painting in a mural style using acrylic paint, window pencils, and every shape brush one could imagine. We met several challenges with the cold weather setting in. We had to paint in layers on separate days as it took quite a bit of time for the paint to dry in the cold.
This was truly a rewarding experience. It really kicked off the holiday spirit of giving for the month and we met so many community members and city staff along the way.
Chamber of Commerce
The theme this year has been a longstanding one of Sedro “Woolleyville” (Imagine Whoville and the iconic Grinch with Sedro Woolley Style). We spent another 3 partial days here as there were so many window panes. The prep work took most of the first day. Again we used acrylic paint and every imaginable brush. This time we were able to work inside and out as most of the chamber had been sectioned off to reduce the risk of the spread of COVID-19. We wanted to tell a story with this painting. We painted the town on the bottom panes and highlighted the Grinch’s progression through the story on the above two panes. We ended with the Grinch’s heart growing to represent what the Chamber does of our community. The kindness and effort that Cindy Lou Who shows the Grinch symbolized the amount of effort, love, and dedication the Chamber of Sedro Woolley puts into every event. We definitely missed all the events they normally do, but also recognized how much effort they put in to make the best of trying times. Instead of Blast from the Past and the Logger Rodeo they held a community virtual dance competition and virtual 5k. Instead of the Lighted Christmas Parade they held the window painting competition and fundraiser and helped pass out breakfast from Santa, with a special Grinch appearance. They also partnered with the community to do a 12-day of Christmas drawing for gift baskets at local shops. The engagement in this was phenomenal and it brought traffic into stores who all had a rough go this year with the pandemic. Thank you Sedro Woolley Chamber of Commerce. We see you!
